Environment Impact Assessment

(May 2004 - Comprehensive)

 

This stage of report, submitted in May 2004 is assumed as Final Submission to TPT. The additional data reflected in this report is related to oceanographic conditions in terms of Bathymetry, Geotechnical, Tides &  Currents data in addition to the environmental and social data. This report is a complete compilation of the tasks carried out by NEERI since 2002 in line with their scope.

 

Observation on this report are as follows:

  • The baseline environmental information presented for marine, land and socio-economic aspects. Data pertaining to air and noise environment is not discussed. Information pertaining to coral reefs and the methods to manage coral reefs are wll presented.

  • The public perception especially from fishing communities is reported as positive which was gathered from random sample survey carried out during the study.

  • As the land based facilities and modus operandi of the Channel is yet to the finalized, the impacts are addressed in detail for marine environment only.

  • The Environmental Management Plan reported is well presented but does not cover pre and post project monitoring requirements and mechanism for environmental management. The EMP suggests augmentation of fishing jetties at Rameswaram for handling the dredging operations.

  • The report also indicates possible relocation of fishermen of Dhanushkodi & Arimunai in the event of construction of shore based facilities.
