Release on , July 5,2005
Tuticorin Port Commenced Container Handling operation
during 1979-80 with a meagre number of 121 boxes. An American shipping line studied the container traffic
in the Port and
during its first year of operation handled 9325 TEUs in
1980-81. But later
on discontinued the
operation due to non-availablility of handling equipment and
Government policy on Foreign Flagged vessels.
However there was a sudden surge in container traffic all
over the world and Tuticorin Port handled 57,000 TEUs in 1994-95
and 68619
TEUs in 1995-96. There
after Port witnessed an average annual growth rate of 20%.
In view of the
fact that the container
traffic exceeded the Master Plan projection of 19441 TEUs for
the year 1994-95 Tuticorin Port had thrown open berth no.7 for
development as a Container Terminal on BOT basis through private participation during 1995-96.
By inviting global tenders, the licence was awarded to
M/s. PSA SICAL Terminals Ltd.,
on 15-7-1998. The
Container traffic had touched an all time high of 2,53,880 TEUs
in 2003-04 and 3,07,310 TEUs in 2004-2005.
It is anticipated that
container traffic would reach 6,00,000 TEUs during
2007-08 warranting
one more full fledged container berth.
Hence
based on the in principle approval accorded by the Govt. of
India during October, 2004,
Port proposed to develop the existing berth no.8 as a
full fledged second container berth
with requisite infrastructure facilities, on BOT basis.
Accordingly global tenders were invited.
